William Lindsey, Born 1794 in Kentucky, Died 1826 in Indiana

William Lindsey was born in Kentucky between 1790-1795 (Mona Lindsey info. has 7-13-1794)
He married Nancy McCormick, who was the daughter of John McCormick.

Abstract of the will of John McCormick of Jackson Co., IN:

p. 10-11 John McCORMICK
wife Ann
undivided 500 acres land in Clark Co. that I bought of William CROHAN to sons
Samuel, Thomas, and James.
Daughter Sally CRAFORD (CRAWFORD?)
Dau. Jane and her children
Daughter Nancy LINDSEY
Sons John and Thomas  (John married Rebecca Findley, dau. of Abel and Rebecca Courtney Findley)

I'm guessing the will was written 1822-1824, as the ones before and after it suggest.

The Lindsey man who Nancy McCormick married was likely our William Lindsey.  Joshua Lindsey, William's father, lived on or near the McCormick farm in present-day Jackson County in 1813:

Early Jackson County History pg. 49

"This unfortunate man, who lived on or near Mr. Findley's late homestead place, had spent the night with a Mr. Lindsey, - the family name of Mr. Findley's wife, who lived on or near the McCormick place.  As there were indications of Indians in the morning, Lindsey dissuaded him from leaving for his home; but as the day advanced, and the fall of the rain subsided, his fear vanished and he determined to venture, and so mounting his beast and shouldering his gun,  he set out.  He had gone but a short distance, when, descending the steep bank of a little stream, or ravine now crossed by the Brownstown and Seymour road, a few hundred yards west of the Findely farm house,  an Indian concealed in a hollow tree standing on the opposite bank, fired upon him through an opening in the tree and shot him dead,- the ball, if I remember right, striking him square in the forehead.  He pitched head long from his horse into the water, and his gun, which was probably carried on his shoulder, was also pitched forward, muzzle-end downward and imbedded in the soft mud, at the bottom of the ravine, then well filled with water; and there it was found standing soon afterward , when his scalped remains were found and taken away for burial.
"

George Doom Killed and John Ketcham Wounded

" About the middle of March,1813, John Ketcham and Geo. Doom, a militiaman from Harrison county, then on duty, went on an errand to Johnson  (Joshua?) Lindsey's,- Lindsey having during the winter of 1812 removed from Ketcham's fort to his farm some miles above.  On their return home they were waylaid and fired on by the Indians.  Doom was killed, and Ketcham badly wounded with two balls.  When he reached the fort a messenger was sent to Vallonia for a reinforcement.  About twenty men under command of Lieutenant _______  proceeded to where Doom's corpse lay; after carrying it to Lindsey's, William Ruddick, John Samuel, and Frederick Funk were detailed to bury the dead, and remained at Lindsey's till next morning.  The scout proceeded up the country for miles without making any discovery of Indian signs, and returned home.  The fatigue party having completed the burial, the sun yet an hour high, concluded that the Indians were all gone, and that they would return to the fort.  They had proceeded about three hundred yards when the Indians, lying in ambush near their path, fired on them and wounded Ruddick and Samuel, then retreated."

William Lindsey served as a juror on the first trial in Jackson County:
1886: History of Jackson County, Indiana. Brant and Fuller.

Pg. 565
THE first session of the Jackson Circuit Court was held at
Brownstown, and began on Monday, April 7, 1817. Hon.
David Raymond was present as presiding judge, and Leonard C.
Shewmaker and James McGee were his associates.

Pg. 566
The first trial shown by the records was one against John
Berry for obstructing the highway. He was found "not guilty"
by the following jury: William Flinn, John Ritter, Samuel Wil-
son, William Williams, Elisha Herold, John McCormick, Jr.,
Thomas Kinworthy, William Lindsey, Joseph Cox, James Huche-
son, John Parker and Peter Herrington; twelve good and lawful
men. This was the first petit jury of the county. Adam Miller,
Josiah Jenkins and John Milroy pleaded guilty to assault and
battery, and were fined $8, $3 and $1 respectively.

William Lindsey was a ranger in Capt. James Bigger's Company out of Clark County, (which included Jackson Co. in 1812) Indiana in the War of 1812.  This is the same company that James Elliot, friend of John Lindsey (b. 1792), served in.  William appeared on a muster roll created by John Ketcham (Joshua and family lived in Ketcham's Fort during the winter of 1812).

This is from John Ketcham's reminiscences:

Captain James Bigger later moved to Owen Co., IN as did William Lindsey:

John and Hudson McCormick were brothers of William Lindsey's wife, Nancy McCormick.  William's daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah, married brothers Daniel and Amos Ragsdale, who are mentioned in the article. Daughter Nancy married William Wilson, who may have been  related to Thomas Wilson, also mentioned in the article.  The article states that William Lindsey died in the summer of 1826:

More on Captain James Bigger:

http://allendrake.com/elpasohistory/epstory/pgtx359.htm
BIGGER, Captain James and Elizabeth Hart (1797-1863) – James was born in 1791 in Ohio. He died in 1841 SE El Paso and is buried in old Clarksville Cemetery. He was the son of John Bigger, a Virginian of Irish stock. James married a Miss Stewart in Ohio who died soon thereafter. He then moved near Spencer, Indiana, and there married Miss Elizabeth Hart who accompanied him to Illinois in 1836, bringing a 16 year old son, Pleasant, with them.

Captain James Bigger had a company of militia at the Battle of Tippecanoe, fighting under Colonel Bartholomew and General Harrison's over-all command. Captain Bigger may also have accompanied Colonel Bartholomew when his militia burned the Grand Kickapoo Village in West Twp., McLean County, Illinois in 1813. Both men were supporters of General Harrison, and both moved into Illinois together, and are buried near each other in the old Clarksville Cemetery. He remained a Whig politically. He is an ancestor of today's Bigger family in this area.

Subject: William Lindsey married Nancy McCormick 1814, Jackson Co., Indiana

    Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this!  I have yet another William
Lindsey that I believe belongs to my line, but I need to find proof. This
William was born in Kentucky around 1790, and he married Nancy McCormick (b
1795, in VA) in Jackson Co., Indiana about 1814. Nancy was the daughter of
John McCormick. William and Nancy were living in Owen Co., IN for the 1820
census.  William died around 1828, and his widow got remarried, to Jesse
    Peden in 1828.

I think that William was related to my Joshua Lindsey, who may have lived on
or near the McCormick farm in Jackson Co. at the time William married Nancy
McCormick. So if any of the following information looks familiar, please let
    me know.

    Children of  William and Nancy were Elizabeth, b.1815  m. Daniel Ragsdale;
Nancy Louisa, b.1818  m. William Wilson;  Sarah Jane, b.1820  m. Amos
    Ragsdale; William H., b.1824  m. Zerelda  P_____.; Lucy Anne b. 1826;
    Rebecca, b.1827;  and possibly Martha.

William H. Lindsey, son of William and Nancy, b. 1824, married Zerelda P.
______.  William was living in Owen Co. IN in 1850, in Linn Co., KS in 1860,
and in Labette Co., KS in 1880.  He died sometime before 1900, probably in
Labette Co.  Between 1852 and 1860, William and his family lived in Iowa,
and 4 of his children were born there.

Children of William H. Lindsey and Zerelda P. were Draper A., b.1848  m.
    Carrie Stone, Malissa, b. 1850: Nancy, b. 1852;  William, b.1854 m. Mary L.
    _____ ; James, b.1855 m. Millie L. _____ ;  Mary, b. 1856; Robert, b.1858;
    and possibly others.

Draper Alonzo Lindsey, son of William and Zerelda, b.1848, attended
Northwestern University.  He was the Superintendent of Schools in Fargo, ND.
He became an attorney, and was the Fargo city attorney for several years.
He married Carrie Stone in 1877.  Draper died in Ramsey, MN, in 1925.

Children of Draper A. Lindsey and Carrie were Ralph A. b.1881 m. Ruby G.
    _______; Marion M., b. 1883, and Gladys, b.1897.  All 3 children were born
    in North Dakota.

Ralph A. Lindsey, son of Draper and Carrie, b.1881, lived in Minneapolis, MN
in 1930.  He was involved in educational sales.  He married Ruby G.  ______.
Children of Ralph and Ruby are Dorothea G.;  Melissa G.;  Mary C.;  Ruth V.
Peter C.;  John C.; David C.; Suzanne G.; and possibly more.

I am hoping to find verification of the parents and family of William
Lindsey, who married Nancy McCormick.  Perhaps someone has knowledge of some
of these descendants, or knows of a living male Lindsey descendant who would
be willing to participate in the DNA project.

Please let me know if you can help me identify this William.  Thanks!

Even better, try your luck [ H E R E ]. If you have a head of household in Owen Co. IN in the year 1820, he is surely going to show up in this list.

The census used is Debbie Drescher's transcripton. The Listers Book was transcribed from a copy of the original. The complete transcription of the census can be purchased from Debbie Drescher; the copy of the Listers book can be purchased from the Owen County Historical & Genealogical Society. See Publications for Sale section of the Society's home page. Both the Census transcription and the Listers Book give additional information. Since the census taker and the Lister were different persons with different ideas as to the spellling of names, the compiler of this study has used the most current accepted spelling.
