 The maps below show the pattern of Lindsey family land patents in Shelby Co., AL and in adjacent Talladega Co.  The Shelby Co. patents were the first ones made, beginning in 1824 (though census data shows the Lindsey's were in Shelby Co. by 1820).  The Talladega Co. patents were all made in 1835 or later, after the death of David Lindsey.

David Lindsey can be seen at the center of the family lands surrounded by his sons and sons-in-law (all were named in David's estate settlement) in Shelby Co.  All of the six sons of David Lindsey patented land in Shelby Co. except David Jr., who was one of the younger sons (b. 1785).  David Jr's land patents were all made in Talladega Co. after his father died. 

Of David Lindsey's six daughters, four had husbands who patented land near David Lindsey in Shelby Co.  These four daughters were Rebecca Lindsey Fulton, Huldah Lindsey Crowson, Elizabeth Lindsey Hale, and Rachel Lindsey Lovelady.  Of David Lindsey's other two daughters, Mary Ann Lindsey Smith lived nearby in Coosa Co., while Lydia Lindsey Skillman Canterbury  appears to have lived out of the area at the time of David's death (her second husband, John Canterbury, was on the 1830 census in McNairy Co., TN, where he lived next door to John Lindsey [grandson of David] and David Skillman [Lydia's son by her first marriage] ).  Two of Lydia's sons, James and Elijah Skillman, patented land in Shelby Co. after the death of David Lindsey.

The Talladega Co. patents were made by the surviving sons of David Lindsey: John, James, and David Jr.  David's other three sons, Thomas, Elijah, and Joseph Lindsey, had all died by 1840.  It is unclear to me if the patents made by Joseph Lindsey in Shelby Co. were made by the son of David Lindsey, or the son of John Lindsey.  Joseph Lindsey, son of David, was on the 1830 census for Shelby Co, but he did not appear on the 1840 census.  The dates of the Joseph Lindsey patents in Shelby Co. were in 1834 and 1839.  The younger Joseph Lindsey, son of John (b. 1812), may have been the patentee.  The land was directly adjacent to John Lindsey's patent in Shelby Co.  Joseph Lindsey's patents in Talladega Co. were also adjacent to those of John Lindsey.
