Joseph Lindsey b. 1807, died 1883 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama
| Census data | Joseph's mother, Phoebe Lindsey | Joseph's brother, James Lindsey | Joseph's children | Joseph's daughter, Mary Ann |
| Source documents and letters | Tallapoosa Co. Lindsey marriages | Confusion over Benjamin F. Lindsey | Joseph's son, John G. Lindsey | Joseph's daughter, Nancy Bob |
Possible son of Jacob Lindsey Jr. and Phoebe. The family bible of Jacob and Phoebe lists a son named Joseph who was born in 1807 and who died in 1883. Joseph married Nancy.
Summary of research findings: The census data proves that Joseph Lindsey who lived in Tallapoosa Co. from about 1844 until he died in 1883 was the man named in Jacob Lindsey Jr. and wife Phoebe Lindsey's bible. I searched the census data from 1840-1880. Each time I did a Soundex search for Joseph Lindsay/Linsey in the U.S. I searched for a man by this name born in Georgia in 1807 +/- 5 years. In some cases Joseph of Tallapoosa Co. was the single result, and sometimes there were other Joseph Lindsey's listed, but each of the others was either the wrong age, or born in the wrong state.
The data for each census listed only one possible Joseph Lindsey who could have been the man named in the bible record. So it is logical to conclude that Joseph Lindsey who lived and died in Tallapoosa Co., Alabama was the son of Jacob and Phoebe Lindsey.
Other evidence provided in documents submitted by Bernie
Lindsey (http://mimpickles.com/lindsey/group2/joseph/joseph_b_1807/joseph.htm)
proves that Joseph Lindsey of Tallapoosa Co., AL was the father of
Benjamin F. Lindsey. Benjamin was born in Alabama ca. 1838, and he married
Amanda Ammons in St. Louis, MO in 1873. Benjamin F. Lindsey died in
Clinton Co., IL in 1878.
Family letters written by John G. Lindsey (son of
Joseph Lindsey b. 1807) from Tallapoosa Co. to the widow of Benjamin Lindsey in
Clinton Co. demonstrate that Benjamin Lindsey was the brother of John G.
Lindsey. The same names that were found in the census data
(including John G. Lindsey) as children of Joseph Lindsey were found named as
siblings in John G's letters to his former sister-in-law. The death
records for Benjamin Lindsey in Clinton Co. show that he was born in Georgia in
1838, which also matches the census data for the family of Joseph Lindsey.
Among the family letters submitted by Bernie Lindsey is a letter written by
Joseph Lindsey in 1874. It mentions the recent marriage of brother James.
This brother was James Lindsey, b. 1808 (named in Jacob Lindsey Jr.'s bible
record) who married Margaret Kendrick in Tallapoosa Co. in 1873.
It seems certain that Benjamin F. Lindsey of Clinton Co. IL was the son of Joseph Lindsey and the grandson of Jacob and Phoebe Lindsey.
The research done by Yvonne 'Jyl' Hardy proves that Jacob Lindsey Jr. was the son of Jacob Lindsey Sr., who was born in Frederick Co. VA by 1746, and who migrated to Wilkes. Co., GA about 1785, where he later died. Jyl's research also proved that Jacob Lindsey Sr. was the son of Edmund Lindsey Sr. born 1697.
So the lineage of L0156 can be proved all the way to Edmund Lindsey Sr., a Long Marsh pioneer.
Yippee!!
1840: They would have been in Georgia. There is a Joseph Lindsey in Troup Co. Right age. 2 sons under 5, 2 5-10, 2 daughters 5-10. This could be him if one boy and one girl grew up and left home by 1850. Since they got married in 1830, they couldn't have any grown children, though. Also there was a male in his twenties in the house. Maybe extended family? A Baldwin Tankersley lived nearby. Rootsweb family tree has a Baldwin Tankersley the son of Joseph Tankersley who married Buckner.. Also another tree has John Tankersley who married Josephine Lindsey as grandson of Joseph Tankersley who married Buckner. No trees had them both, though.
1850: Only one Joseph Lindsey of any spelling born in Georgia within 5 years
of 1807. That is Joseph Linsey of Township 21, Tallapoosa Co.
Note: all born in Georgia except two.

including the bible record. The article says that Phoebe lived with Joseph Lindsey in Tallapoosa Co. before she died in
1867 (Pg. 37). This makes sense because the Lindsey-Tankersley Cemetery is
nearby the Lindsey property in Tallapoosa Co.
James Lindsey, b. 1808, brother of

Confusion over Benjamin F. Lindsey:
I think some of the information that says Joseph's son Benjamin died in
Tallapoosa is because they have confused another Benjamin Lindsey with Joseph's
son who moved to Illinois. This Benjamin may be the one they are referring

Wish I could be of more help! Lou
Jeff,
I have a Lou Ella (Lula) Lindsey in my line from Tallapoosa Co. I know of a
marriage to William Blakely, but I don't know of any info on this marriage. I
think he may have been alot older than Lula. Lula was born on May 25, 1879, and
died October 18, 1968.
Lula's parents were Benjamin F. Lindsey and Margaret H. Price, and they were
married on December 3, 1867, in Tallapoosa Co. Their children were: Sarah
Harriet (Hattie) Lindsey m. Clifton Clay West (my g-grandparents), Thomas M.
Lindsey, Lou Ella (Lula) Lindsey, Mary (Tud) Lindsey, W. W. (Bill) Lindsey, E.
Minor Lindsey, and Leige? Lindsey.
Several of these siblings ended up in the Tallassee area.
I have just started my search on the Lindsey side of the family and have limited
info. There was another set of Lindsey's in Tallapoosa Co. in the Daviston area,
but I have not been able to tie my line to those.
Does any of this info connect with yours?
